A fruit and vegetable stall based in Darwen Market has been crowned as the area’s best independent shop.
Woods Fruit and Veg stall were nominated by customers for the ‘Darwen Shop of the Year’ title late last year.
David Livesey, Owner of Woods Fruit and Vegetable said: “I am delighted about winning the award. It’s very good for the team and also for the market to come first out of all of the shops in the area.
Prizes for the winning shop include professional marketing sessions, a tour of Parliament and lunch with Jake.
M & O Fish in the 6 Day Market also won the runner up prize in the same competition.
Russell Lambert said: “We are really pleased to have won the award. It’s great to see two market stalls come out on top.
It is not something that we really pushed as we were in the middle of a big move into the six day market, so it’s fantastic news.”
The awards celebrate unique independent retailers who are the life blood of local communities including village shops, local butchers, market stalls and hair dressers.
The initiative was championed by Rossendale and Darwen’s local MP Jake Berry: “This competition is a small way of letting our local retailers know how much we appreciate and support them.
“Here in Rossendale and Darwen, we are really lucky to have many wonderful and unique independent shops who are the life blood of our communities.”
The competition ran until 31st December 2014 and the results were announced by Mr Berry in January. Each online voter was entered into a raffle to win a £50 voucher.
